Over the course of a few years, my experience has been that while it is possible to work directly with parts suppliers of all business sizes in China, in general, the "hassle" factor of dealing with small businesses is quite high and large companies in China are not interested in selling parts unless the volume of the order is high or the order has high dollar value. By example, it is possible to source $100,000 worh of parts at a cost of $60,000 from smaller companies in China, but you will spend $20,000 supporting the effort. Larger companies are easier to deal with but want $80,000 for the parts as do the middle men who will manage the buy from a group of smaller companies on your behalf. It has also been my experience that companies who provide the service of buying from a number of companies in order to receive favorable pricing for you, have great problems themselves in managing the activity and often eventually establish their own manufacturing facilities. Is my experience familiar?

Terrapane provides businesses and individuals with the essential services they need in order to be successful in China. However, some individuals and businesses are not interested in hiring an outside company to assist with Chinese engagements, preferring instead to do the work by themselves and/or asking existing employees to take on those additional responsibilities.

Even so, we want to do what we can to help everybody succeed. We wanted to provide people with a resource where they can go to get useful information and where they can ask questions. It is for this reason that we decided to create Terrapane Forums: a place where people can go to learn more about manufacturing products in China, importing, intellectual property issues, counterfeit goods, shipping, customs, tariffs, regulations, Chinese language, culture, and so forth.

We welcome everybody to participate in the Forums. Feel free to ask questions or to provide answers. Members of the Terrapane team will certainly attempt to answer any questions posted to the site.

We do kindly request that people use this site as an educational and business tool, not as a means of advertising. Many Chinese “manufacturers” (and we put that in quotes to indicate that these are not truly manufacturers) like to use every avenue available to peddle their goods, including spam, improper listings on otherwise legitimate web sites, discussion forums, and so forth. We will remove any listing that appears to be a form of advertisement for goods and services.

For those looking for manufacturers of certain kinds of goods, please do not post a question that will open the door for such spammers. For example, if you are looking for companies that can manufacturer plastics, try visiting a site like Alibaba and you will find hundreds of both legitimate and illegitimate listings. Alternatively, contact Terrapane and we will be happy to work with you to identify legitimate and honest Chinese manufacturers and/or suppliers.

We hope that Terrapane Forums will serve as a reliable source of useful information, regardless of your level of engagement in China.
